Small steps…

I don’t know about you, but I can sometimes forget that we don’t make progress by sitting around waiting for giant leaps but by being willing to consistently take very small steps.

It can sometimes seem like we aren’t making any progress, and then one day, we look back and see just how far we’ve come. Those tiny steps are often quiet and sometimes even imperceptibly small, and this can be frustrating at times, but they all add up, leading us to great heights. The key is making sure you’re headed in the right direction and then being persistent.

That direction is an inward one for me and has been for a long time. Spiritual progress can’t be measured by looking outside ourselves but is found in one simple question: Do I feel more peaceful? This is how I know I’m headed in the right direction. Nothing else really matters but this.

The beautiful thing I’ve experienced in my spiritual practice is that as I’m willing to take all those tiny steps each day, I often find that I’m suddenly taking quantum leaps!

We practice each tiny note, and at some point, they are no longer seemingly disconnected notes…we play indescribably beautiful music.

You can be in the crappies one minute and cry tears of joy the next simply by consciously and seriously shifting focus from what you don’t have, what you want (and therefore are lacking), or have lost to the good present here and now.
