I’ve been trying to meditate and deep dive these last few days (often unsuccessfully). I’ve only seen some glimmers but I’m grateful for those.

What do I say here? I know we all do the best we know how at any given moment. However much it might seem otherwise. The one idea that keeps coming to thought right now is that hate is never overcome by more hate.

How that looks for you? I can’t tell you that. I do know it’s not just glossing over things or putting our heads in the sand or “sending love and light.”

I’ll use my relationship with my dad as an example of what this has looked like for me. Some of you might be familiar with my backstory. The very, very short version is this:

My dad was an abusive alcoholic and my mom passed when I was really young so there was no buffer. I left home as soon as could and felt so much anger for my dad and yet I felt very guilty for this so I stuffed it down constantly. At one point, I began to allow myself to feel the anger and at the same reserved compassion for my dad in the realization that I knew we are all doing the best we can at any given moment.

Slowly, the anger began to give way and I experienced a profound healing of our relationship.

If you’re feeling angry or sad right now, feel angry and sad, but reserve at least a little space for compassion.

Ultimately, whatever we give, we give to ourselves, so give only what you want to receive.
