I don’t think anything in my life has gone as I thought it would…thankfully. As it turns out, my ideas of what I wanted and needed were far too small. And even though I’ve seen some magnificent things far beyond my wildest imagination, I know this is still the tippy tip of an infinite iceberg.
We all have ideas of what we need, what we want, and what will make us happy. The problem isn’t that we ask too much of life but that we ask too little. I’m never referring to things or being greedy. The “things” are the least of it and automatically follow when we dare to pioneer the inner depths.
We are all being led. We can hear direct guidance if we are very open; otherwise, circumstances nudge us and sometimes squeeze us in the direction we need to go. These nudges often look like unexpected detours that lead us down roads we would have never found had we clung to our ideas of what is best for us.
These detours don’t always look like a good thing at first, and we can even feel like we’ve lost our way. If we cling to how we think things need to look or should look, these detours can also be experienced as very painful. Still, if we keep our eyes open for the gifts and are careful not to keep looking in the rearview mirror at what we left, we begin to see the beautiful views on the new, unexpected path.
I am so grateful for all the detours that led me away from the roads I thought I wanted and needed to travel.
