It’s the first day of May, and I’m going to share an exercise with you that might be a little challenging.
We often believe that we need to be loved or get something to be happy, but the truth is that what we give and extend brings us happiness, not what we get. Likewise, the pain we feel is the pain of withholding or being unwilling to give.
Many years ago, there was a person who I thought deeply hurt me. One night it came to me to do this exercise so that I might be free from the pain I was feeling. At first, I did it through gritted teeth; it wasn’t easy, but I did it anyway and continued to do it every night until I began to feel the peace I longed for.
You might want to start with someone other than the most challenging person on your list, but you certainly can, as these are the ones that offer us the greatest opportunity.
I would think about everything that I truly wanted in my heart and one by one offer these things to this person…
May you have peace. May you know you are loved. May you never feel alone. May you know you are always cared for. May you have everything you need. May you feel guided every step of the way. May you…be as specific as you can.
Your list might look different. It doesn’t matter. Whatever your heart truly desires is suitable for your list of offerings.
It’s easy to do this with those we like or love; the challenge (and greater opportunity) is to extend our list to those we don’t like for whatever reason.
This can also be done with political figures and groups, but you have to stick with it for as many days and nights as it might take until you actually feel like you want them to have the things on your list.
I’ll let the results speak for themselves.
What a remarkable challenge to us all. Especially for our government officials.
Will need to start this exercise.
