We all have ideas of what we need, what we want, and what will make us happy. The problem with our ideas isn’t that we ask too much but that we ask too little.
I’m never referring to things or being greedy. The things are the least of it and automatically follow when we dare to pioneer the inner depths. True joy is only found within.
We are usually led either through the willingness to hear and follow directly or circumstances nudge us in the direction we need to go. These unexpected detours are often those nudges (or boulders) that lead us down roads we would have never found had we clung to our ideas of what is best for us.
These detours don’t always look like a good thing at first, and we can even feel like we’ve lost our way. Still, if we keep our eyes open for the gifts and are careful not to keep looking in the rearview mirror at what we left, we begin to see the beautiful blossoms that line this new, unexpected path.
I am so grateful for all detours (and boulders that fell in my way) that led me away from the roads I thought I wanted to travel.
