Gut feelings, inner guidance, inner wisdom, intuition, inner GPS, instincts, a 6th sense, and the Holy Spirit are just a few terms given for the inner knowing that guides us and that we can always trust to lead us in the very best way. It has a much larger perspective we simply can’t see through human awareness. The more we listen to it, the more we see that we can trust it, and the clearer it becomes.
When pilots learn to fly, they must undergo instrument training to fly in low or no visibility conditions. Pilots can become very disoriented when flying in these conditions and even feel upside-down when they aren’t. They have to learn how to read their instruments and TRUST them no matter how they might feeeeeel; they have to learn how to fly on instruments. Listening to our inner guidance is like learning how to fly on instruments rather than relying on our very limited human understanding.
Just like with pilots, learning to hear and to follow this guidance is completely based on trust; we won’t listen to something we don’t trust. Indeed, we won’t even hear it. For most of us, this trust has to be developed through practice. We listen and follow and discover that we CAN trust it and so become more willing to listen.
It is always whispering within…always. Meditation and prayer (inner communion) are ways to open ourselves to hearing it. Getting quiet and simply listening for its whispers help us to learn how to hear past the noise to the ever-present guidance that is always walking with us, behind us, and before us.
Agreed!! So many times my “gut” gave me a warning – a classic case of when in doubt, don’t.
Thnx for the gentle reminder.
