Like many, I experienced many deep challenges from a very young age. I searched everywhere for some sense of solace but never found anything lasting. (Even temporary respites were rare).
When I had my first life-altering spiritual/mystical experience, I became aware that I had never found what I was looking for because I was always looking in the wrong place. I had been searching “out there,” when it was within me all along. I had been looking for the key to happiness in every hand but my own.
I know it can seem like if this thing or person were different, we would be happy, but this is the proverbial carrot that we never quite catch. There is always another thing and another person that seems to keep our happiness just out of reach.
The key is to learn to take your focus off of what’s out there and begin to look within because that door, is not now, and never has been locked.
I’m grateful that in all my searching, I never found anything that gave me the slightest semblance of lasting fulfillment, for had I been so deceived to believe it could be found outside somewhere, I would have never delved into the inner depths and discovered the inexplicable treasures that live within each of us.
If you feel like you have searched and yet feel a sense of hopelessness, I know that’s not fun, but you are actually in a better place than those who (temporarily) believe they have found something outside of themselves that will make them happy. You know from experience that you haven’t found anything out there and now just need to turn within.
This isn’t personal; you haven’t failed. To believe you have failed would be like saying you failed because you didn’t find the ocean in the desert. There is an ocean to be found; it’s just not in the desert.
The key to happiness is the recognition that we never needed a key because the door is never locked. The door is waiting for you. It’s always been waiting for you.
