The inner voice. It’s called many things, but, like with all things, the experience of what it is doesn’t change by the word we use to point to it. I discovered that learning how to hear it and follow its guidance is the most important thing there is to do.
I’ve heard this voice in too many ways to count: Sometimes, it’s a quiet whisper, a feeling that nags at me to pay attention. Other times it thunders speaking of ideas the human mind would say are foolish or impossible. It’s sometimes almost an audible voice, and often it’s a warm feeling that flows through me. It speaks to me through seemingly ordinary everyday things–the television guide, advertisements, street signs, songs, other people, a tiny reflection on a piece of metal–too many things to count. In those moments, these things are no longer ordinary; they are the deliverers of sweet messages of love and joy. They become tools to teach me inexplicable ideas.
This voice is always singing to us in and through everything. It will never stop until we hear it, for it is the voice of Love that is infinite and eternal.
Hearing it can take practice. One way to practice is through meditation and prayer. (I hesitate to use the word “prayer” because I am not referring to any sort of asking, begging, or pleading for anything.) One way I meditate could be called competitive meditation: I ponder some idea of truth so that I might open a way to hear. I turn my focus away from the noise and lean toward the truth, opening my inner ears to hear. I then “pray” or listen.
The prayer portion isn’t me talking. This voice doesn’t need me to tell it anything; It’s me listening and trusting, and some feeling or sense of peace, joy, or a realization ensues. Sometimes this all happens very quickly, and sometimes, I have to stick with it for a while.
I find it best to do this in very short time intervals, of just a minute or even less, but many times a day, always with the same goal…to feel peace.
That’s how I do it. This works well for me now, it took a very long time to get here. I Like that I can practice round the world clock PRN
