Imagine a little box the size of a cocktail napkin. Now place it in the universe. That little box represents what we think we know, and the universe represents the infinite light of what there is to know. True spiritual experiences simply allow a tiny crack in that little dark box so the light can enter. It is a willingness to raise what we think we know to doubt. When we cling to what we think we know, there is no room for anything new to enter; our minds are closed.
Some of the things that we cling to most tightly are our spiritual and religious beliefs. We are often so sure that we know what is right and true, not only for ourselves but for everybody. Throughout history, many wars have been based on this. Not the least of which are the battles within ourselves.
How do we know if our minds are closed? It’s very simple: Do we feel a deep sense of peace? If we don’t, there’s something that needs to be questioned. When I’m clenching and holding onto something that I am having difficulty questioning, something I feel very justified in, it helps me to simply say, “Okay, I don’t have to let this go entirely; I’m going to just place this right over here at my side for the next minute or so. I can pick it back up if I want to. But for now, I’m going to lay it down, get quiet, and listen for wisdom, not my own. I am going to listen to the wisdom within me. I do know that I don’t like the way I feel right now because I don’t feel peaceful. Maybe there’s another way of looking at this. What do I really have to lose by asking?”
Humility is the recognition that we don’t know, but a light within us knows everything and wants to pour in and shine upon us.
It’s as though we are sitting in that little dark box reading and studying an exquisite menu. We study the ingredients of all the dishes. We talk about them and even argue about them because we think we know this menu so well. When we begin to question what we think we know, we allow the light to enter, and we actually taste those delectable dishes.
