Boom! I’m happily chugging along in a direction, and an obstacle falls in my path that I can’t go around. I used to get upset when this happened, but now I feel grateful because it’s clear guidance that I am headed in the wrong direction. I have had way too many experiences now that have proven that these obstacles protect me from driving off a cliff.
When this happens, it doesn’t always feel good at first because I’ve usually decided that I really want and need whatever is on that road, but a baby cries when matches are pried from her chubby little fingers too. I know that I don’t know what’s in my best interest, but there is an all-loving Intelligence that does that I’ve learned to trust and defer to.
I’ve actually had experiences where I cried like that baby with matches, thinking I needed something, but beneath that, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for not getting it.
The reason for the roadblock isn’t always immediately apparent. Sometimes I don’t see the cliff I would have gone over until years later.
A fun little example of this was when I drove through an unfamiliar town with a friend many years ago. I had a problem with my car, and it was delivered to a repair shop and was ready for pick up. Neither one of us knew where the repair shop was located. (This was before GPS.)
We drove through the town, not focusing on our destination but chatting about spiritual principles. There had been heavy rainfall with some minor flooding in the town, so as we drove, we encountered closed roads, people directing the traffic, and other obstacles that made us head in a particular direction. At one intersection, a truck pulled out in front of us, causing us to turn. We encountered one obstacle after another for about 15 minutes until we looked up, and right in front of us stood the little repair shop tucked away.
