As a professional fine artist for many years, I stared down plenty of blank canvases. I always set up my studios to look more like living rooms with plenty of places to sit, relax, lounge and do nothing. It was when I was “doing nothing” that ideas would often come. The canvases were “painted” during those times–actually applying the paint to the canvas was just an activity that carried out what was revealed while doing nothing.
It wasn’t easy to allow myself to look like I wasn’t doing anything but painting all those years was a great permission slip. If I didn’t do that when I painted, it was pretty clear, as the canvas doesn’t lie.
Creating art, any form of art, any form of creativity, parallels life. It’s necessary in art and in life to give ourselves permission to be quiet, to listen within, to allow imagination to play, to rest from all the frantic thinking and attempts to figure things out…and to lay down our plans for a bit, giving new ideas some room to bloom. Newness, freshness, joy, and yes, peace, are always there. They are just sitting patiently in waiting room until we allow a little space for them to enter.
I love this. Thanks for the reminder to let creativity spark!
