Just a little FYI: I am NEVER referring to “romantic love” or the “romantic heart” or a sentimental heart when I write about the heart. I am ALWAYS referring to our inner wisdom, or inner GPS–that inner Voice that is all wise and knows not only the very best way for each of us to travel, but knows how that guidance benefits everyone for all time. I know that there’s no way for me to possibly know what will serve me and everyone so I seek to defer to this inner direction, with the goal of learning how to listen to this and follow it at all times in all circumstances.
Learning to Hear
I know this can be tricky and learning how to hear this comes with practice. We have to first learn that we don’t know, so that we’re willing to ask and listen–why would we even ask if we think we know what’s best? We then have to learn that we can trust the guidance we are given. We learn this as do it and see that things work out in ways that we couldn’t possibly have done on our own and are far better than when we try to guide ourselves. The more we learn we can trust it, the more willing we are to ask–we begin to hear more often and more clearly.
One of the reasons it’s difficult to hear, it is that we think it’s going to lead us in a way that will require us to sacrifice something we want and/or need, but we learn through experience how ludicrous this fear is, and are willing to follow the guidance despite the fear.
The Little Red Car
There was a time when I had no money, no job and no car. I was in a profoundly peaceful spiritual place but the outer picture didn’t look great. One day, from the large picture window at my dad’s house where I was staying, I saw a little red car with a “for sale” sign in the window pull up and park across the street. I felt an inner nudge to go talk to the person in the car.
“What!” I thought. “Why would I do that! I have zero money to buy anything, let alone a car!”
This reaction wasn’t new to me, as I have found the Voice often tells me to do things that make little sense to my “understanding” so I calmed down and walked to the front door.
I continued with my ranting, “Well, I have no idea why you’re telling me to do this and I’m not even sure it’s you.” The thought then came, “I’m going to walk down the driveway to get a better look, and if the license plate says JLL on it, I’ll know it’s you.” (My initials are JLL.) It’s important to note that I didn’t consciously conjure up a “test” to see if this was legit guidance–this thought felt inspired as well.
As I walked down the driveway, the license plate came into view and the first three letters stared back at me–JLL. I still had no idea what this was about but approached the woman who was remarkably in still the car, got her phone number, and went back into the house.
The next day, I made an appointment to come look at the car with my brother who knows a lot about cars, still having no clue why, and then forgot about it.
A couple of days later, a friend of mine was passing through town and stopped by for a visit unexpectedly. We were chatting and he reached into his pocket and handed me check saying, “I feel like I’m supposed to give this to you for something.”
It was enough money for the car, insurance, and license plates–everything I needed to get that little puppy on the road. It was the start of my business as a fine artist that I did for almost two decades.
The day I bought the car, my dad was driving me to the Secretary of State to get my license plates. We pulled up to a traffic light and the license plate on the car in front of us read JLL.
