I know it can be hard to believe this sometimes. Sometimes it seems like the waves are crashing in on us so hard all we can do is hang on, but when we can devote even a moment to this idea and really let it sink in, a peace can wash over us that no storm can touch. There is a peace within each of us that never changes and never fluctuates. It’s not dependent on circumstances, conditions, people, or anything outside of ourself and when we allow it to be released, it can calm any storm…without exception.
We open a way for peace by looking for it and looking for it where it exists. It exists within so looking for it outside in circumstances, conditions and people will only leave us feeling frustrated. And just like we can’t see both sides of a coin at the same time, we can’t look for peace AND stare at our problems at the same time. Worry and what appears as our problems are like sitting in the dark, but if we light even a little match, the darkness disappears automatically. We can’t be in the light and the darkness at the same time. In the darkness things can seem very scary; a harmless rope can look like a deadly snake and a coat rack can become an intruder. Peace is the little light that dispels the darkness where we can laugh at the rope and coat rack.
One way I’ve practiced this is by closing my eyes and looking straight at what seems to be the cause of my worry, sadness, or fear and saying, “Okay, it looks like this is happening or that has happened and I feel really worried or sad or afraid, but for the next minute (or however long you feel comfortable) I am going to set this aside, look away from it, and just breathe. I’m going to trust that I am safe and all are safe right now, no matter how much it might appear otherwise. I can pick these problems back up when I’m done if I want to but right now, I’m going to set them on a shelf and light a little match.”

Yes,this too shall pass
